1.b. Introduction

So, what about our five weary travelers? When we left them last, three were facing very long delays at the airport while the other two were heading to their boarding gate for an on-time departure. Why were some of our travelers delayed and the others not? Check below to see the reasons for their delays and to find out how each one of their journeys ended.

Traffic jam on taxiwayTraveler 1
She boarded the airplane on time, but because so many other aircraft were scheduled to depart at the same time, her flight waited for 25 minutes in a long taxi line.

Diverting around weatherTraveler 2
He boarded his flight with high hopes of getting home on time. His flight left on time, but took longer than anticipated en route as the aircraft was directed to fly around a large thunderstorm cell.

Rain at airportTraveler 3
This weary traveler had a 4 hour delay as the flight she was to board had been unable to depart Seattle to get to this airport. Seattle was inundated by a rainstorm that had stalled over Washington. The flight eventually was cleared for takeoff and made the rest of its connections albeit 4 hours later.

Snow at airportTraveler 4
This tired flyer had a 6 hour layover because his flight was destined for Chicago which was being buried under a snowstorm. The flight was held at the airport here until the storm had passed over Chicago and the runways there had been cleared of snow. The aircraft was then allowed to take off and fly its usual route to Chicago.

Delayed at the gateTraveler 5
This delayed passenger waited just less than 2 hours as her airplane had a mechanical problem that was corrected by the airline's mechanic and checked by the pilot before the passengers were enplaned. It was cleared for takeoff and completed its journey without further complications.
