Would building more airports solve the problem?

In the last 40 years there have only been instituted 2 major hub airports: Dallas/Fort Worth, TX and Denver, CO. In other words establishing new hub airports does not happen very often. Of all the reported delays over the last year, over 200,000 delays occurred at only 5 major airports: La Guardia, NY; O'Hare, Chicago; San Francisco, CA; Newark, NY; Atlanta, GA. Perhaps building an additional airport near each of those cities might reduce delays overall, unless, of course, the majority of the delays were caused by inclement weather.

Building more airports will help only if these issues are met:

• Make sure the airports to be built will meet the anticipated traffic capacity for up to 10 - 20 years after each airport begins operation.
• Build new airports in areas where a future need for air transport is predicted
• Their runways will accommodate aircraft of the future (in length and load bearing capacity).
