Should aircraft be allowed to fly directly to their destinations and not follow Federal Airway Routes?

Aircraft, especially commercial aircraft, still need to be monitored and directed by a system that oversees the entire US airspace to maintain efficiency and safety. As emerging technologies are applied to improve equipment and systems for navigation and communication such "direct to" flights will become more and more commonplace.
